In a powerful move symbolizing strategic consolidation and visionary leadership, Shangri-La Asia Limited has appointed Kuok Hui Kwong as its Chief Executive Officer, effective August 1, 2025. Already serving as Chair of the Board and Executive Director, Kuok’s ascension to CEO marks a new chapter of unified leadership for the luxury hospitality group.

A Legacy Reimagined

Born into one of Asia’s most influential business dynasties, Kuok Hui Kwong is the sixth daughter of Robert Kuok Hock-nien, the founder of Shangri-La and Malaysia’s richest man. While her surname may carry generational prestige, her rise within the organization has been built on strategic clarity, operational insight, and quiet resilience — not just inheritance.

With a degree in East Asian Studies from Harvard University, Kuok brings a blend of intellectual rigor and cross-cultural fluency to one of Asia’s most recognizable hospitality empires.

Bridging the Leadership Gap

Kuok steps in to fill a leadership vacuum that began in December 2022, when former CEO Lim Beng Chee stepped down after nearly six years at the helm. While Lim continues as a non-executive board member, the day-to-day operations now fall under Kuok’s command.

The company expressed full confidence in her leadership, noting that “the combination of the roles of chairman and chief executive officer… will enhance strategic cohesion and execution across all levels.

Strategist Behind the Scenes

Kuok joined Shangri-La Asia’s board in 2016 and became Chair in 2017. Behind the scenes, she has been instrumental in setting long-term priorities and steering the group through turbulent times — including the economic uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, the group was among the least aggressive in cutting jobs, preserving its workforce in one of the hardest-hit industries.

Despite her considerable influence, Kuok remains a private figure who rarely gives media interviews, preferring to let her work speak for itself.

From Newsrooms to Boardrooms

Before making her mark in hospitality, Kuok held executive editorial roles. She briefly served as CEO of the South China Morning Post in 2012 before the paper was sold to Alibaba. Her cross-industry experience — spanning media, real estate, and hospitality — gives her a rare perspective on business transformation, brand stewardship, and leadership through change.

Wealth, Power, and Responsibility

Kuok’s financial stake in Shangri-La is substantial. She owns a direct and indirect interest in 95.57 million shares, and also holds over a 5% stake in Kerry Group, the company’s major shareholder. Her monthly base salary stands at HK $576,000 (US$73,000), with added benefits including discretionary bonuses and pension contributions.

Steering the Shangri-La Legacy

Shangri-La Asia currently operates over 100 hotels worldwide across four luxury brands — Shangri-La, Kerry Hotels, JEN, and Traders — with assets tottaling US $13.2 billion. The group reported $2.19 billion in revenue for 2024, a 2% rise from the previous year, though net profit dipped by 12.3% due to regional disparities in performance.

With 77 properties still held by the Kuok family and a global workforce of 25,500, the company continues to play a vital role in luxury hospitality across Asia and beyond.
