Ambreen Ahmad

In a world where resilience meets purpose and leadership is defined by empathy, Ambreen AhmadExecutive Director of the Metro Toronto Movement for Literacy (MTML), stands as a beacon of empowerment and innovation. Honored among Women We Admire’s Top Women Leaders of Toronto, 2025, she embodies the spirit of transformative leadership that bridges education, technology, and social equity. From rebuilding her life with courage and conviction to redefining adult literacy in Canada through creativity and vision, Ambreen’s journey stands as a testament to persistence, compassion, and purposeful leadership that uplifts communities and sparks lasting change.

From Roots of Education to a Life of Purpose

Raised in Pakistan by professional parents—a physician father and a dedicated schoolteacher mother—Ambreen grew up in an environment where education was not merely encouraged but celebrated as a way of life. Building on this strong foundation, she earned a Master’s in English Literature and a Master’s in Educational Planning and Management, setting the stage for a lifelong commitment to learning and transformation.

Education was not just a career choice for Ambreen—it was a calling deeply woven into her upbringing and values. Inspired by her parents’ devotion to learning and service, she dedicated her life to fostering empowerment through education, which instilled in her the conviction that learning shapes lives and communities like nothing else can.

Her educational background, professional training, and wide-ranging work experiences have been instrumental in preparing her to lead and grow an organization, teaching her that leadership is a continuous journey that evolves over time. Her academic background and early career in education equipped her with essential skills in leadership, critical thinking, strategic planning, and effective communication.

A Professional Journey of Growth, Adaptability, and Reinvention

Her professional journey began after marriage and motherhood, unfolding amid personal trials and triumphs. Overcoming the trauma of an abusive marriage, she rebuilt her life as a single mother of two young daughters. These experiences shaped her resilience and empathy, deepening her determination to pursue her dreams.

“My career initially began as a junior school teacher, but my commitment to growth and excellence propelled me forward. I ascended to the role of vice principal at an accountancy college and later transitioned into the corporate world as a Communications Executive in the oil and gas sector. My journey continued with a significant move to Canada, where, despite already being a Canadian citizen, I devoted myself to continuous learning, further studies, and volunteering to successfully integrate into a new environment,” recalls Ambreen.

”Throughout my career in Canada, I have made a conscious effort to step outside my comfort zone and embrace new challenges. Along the way, I have been guided and inspired by remarkable mentors, colleagues, and role models. These relationships, often formed through community engagement, have not only contributed to my personal growth but have also allowed me to deepen my role as a collaborator and relationship-builder among diverse stakeholders,” she added.

“I have witnessed how education transforms confidence, self-esteem, and opportunity. This was especially evident when I led an accountancy school, where I observed firsthand how education gave the underprivileged younger population the confidence to develop their voices, envision a brighter future, and uplift their families and communities. Later, as an adult literacy specialist, I saw the powerful impact that improved reading and writing skills had on adults, fostering new independence and agency,” she expressed.

Leading Change at Metro Toronto Movement for Literacy (MTML)

Joining the Metro Toronto Movement for Literacy (MTML) marked a turning point in Ambreen’s career. With the support of a visionary board and inspiring mentors, she gained the freedom to innovate and lead with creativity. Under her direction, MTML evolved into a hub for collaborative experimentation and collective impact—advancing adult literacy through groundbreaking initiatives.

“As a trailblazer in this sector, I championed and implemented cutting-edge ideas and projects that addressed evolving literacy needs, including the integration of artificial intelligence tools into educational practice, fostering inclusive learning environments, and connecting literacy initiatives with workforce development. Recognizing the importance of community partnerships, I prioritized building meaningful and sustainable relationships with local organizations, educators, and stakeholders, establishing MTML as a hub for collaborative experimentation and collective impact,” says Ambreen.

“My commitment to breaking barriers and scaling best practices led MTML to extend its influence beyond regional boundaries, contributing to knowledge-sharing across Canada and internationally. This global approach, combined with a passion for social justice and equity in education, exemplifies my trailblazing spirit,” she added.

Her dedication to social justice and equity in education earned her recognition as one of the Top Women Leaders of 2025. Further extending her mission, she founded a non-profit organization offering free online tutoring to Canadians, ensuring that education remains accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic status.

Her dedication to the community extends to active participation in advisory committees, including being selected as Co-Chair of the Canadian Coalition for Nonprofit Digital Resilience (CCNDR), among others. In these roles, Ambreen contributes her expertise to national conversations about nonprofit innovation, digital transformation, and capacity building.

”Throughout my journey, I have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to innovation, resilience, and service, and am constantly seeking new ways to effect change, empower individuals, and inspire the next generation of leaders. With an ever-present drive to challenge the status quo, I proudly see myself as a trailblazer advocating for transformative change and forging new pathways in adult literacy and beyond,” she asserts.

Guided by Mentorship, Friendship, and Collective Strength

Ambreen attributes much of her personal and professional growth to the close network of mentors, colleagues, and friends who supported her journey. Their guidance, encouragement, and belief in her abilities shaped her resilience and leadership style. Through collaboration and honest feedback, they empowered her to think boldly, act with integrity, and stay rooted in empathy.

“My friends offered honest feedback and emotional support, giving me the courage to reflect and make important decisions, particularly during challenging times. Working alongside colleagues provided opportunities for collaboration and motivation, sparking new ideas and driving me to step beyond my comfort zone in pursuit of meaningful projects. My mentors have shaped my leadership style by modeling integrity, innovation, and compassion, helping me to develop as an empathetic and forward-thinking leader,” Ambreen recalls.

“Above all, my thirst for knowledge and unwavering desire to do good for others have been guiding forces in my life, pushing me to remain curious, continuously learn, and dedicate myself to uplifting those around me. These relationships and inner motivations have empowered me to be adaptable and proactive in creating positive change, both within the literacy and education sector and in my broader efforts to support and empower my community,” she added.

Ambreen’s unwavering curiosity and her drive to serve others continue to propel her forward as she contributes to national dialogues on nonprofit innovation and digital transformation.

MTML: From Literacy to Lifelong Empowerment

Since its founding in 1978, MTML has stood for literacy empowerment and is well-rooted in community service. Under Ambreen’s leadership, the organization has evolved to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world—embracing AI literacy, rapid labour market changes, digital transformation, and equity-based learning. She remains deeply aligned with MTML’s founding mission: to empower all individuals with the right to read, write, and learn for life.

“I’ve seen how adults struggling with literacy are too often sidelined by stigma, which is why MTML stands as more than an advocate for learning—it’s a champion for dignity, opportunity, and the voices of those long marginalized—standing up for individuals who might otherwise go unheard or unsupported,” says Ambreen.

“Unity is at the heart of what I do—I believe that by joining forces across the literacy sector and communities, we can uplift adults who missed out on education, break stigma, and open doors to lifelong empowerment, inclusion, and meaningful participation in society,” she added.

Innovation at the Core: MTML’s Transformative Offerings

MTML’s commitment to exceeding industry standards shines through its innovative programs and strong relationships with communities and partners—working together to create responsive solutions and raise awareness about the vital role of adult literacy.

“Our offerings include smartphone skills modules and research, continuous digital literacy initiatives, and innovative tools like MTML’s AI Toolkitwhich has stood out as a pioneering resource—supporting both instructors and programs in integrating artificial intelligence concepts into adult education. We also developed a specialized screening tool, designed to fill a critical gap in identifying whether individuals require literacy support, making assessment accessible and accurate for learners and providers,” says Ambreen.

Ambreen explains, “Our needs assessment toolkit helps employers identify and strengthen literacy skills within their teams, enabling targeted development. MTML’s Connecting to Learn is another cornerstone to unite stakeholders to spark new opportunities for partnership and collaboration, and shared growth across the literacy sector.”

A cornerstone of its work, the MTML Learners’ Conference empowers learners through hands-on workshops and sessions on topics they want to explore. The company listens to their stories, publishes them, and shares them with the wider community, amplifying learner voices and showcasing personal success. These conferences not only celebrate achievements but also inform their future programming, ensuring their solutions remain learner-driven and community-focused.

Overcoming Challenges with Vision and Determination

“I may not have founded MTML, but leading it meant rebuilding its strength and relevance amid changing times—especially during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. This required me not only to quickly update my skills and knowledge, especially around the complexities unique to the adult literacy sector, but also to steer MTML through a period of uncertainty and transition,” says Ambreen.

Another persistent challenge has been increasing both funders’ and the broader public’s understanding of what adult literacy truly means and how it directly impacts poverty. Unlike child and youth literacy, which generates much more public and philanthropic attention, adult literacy often remains an afterthought, viewed as a secondary concern. Even when present at platforms and discussions where literacy is positioned as the main theme, Ambreen observed that adult literacy issues rarely take center stage. This is not due to the commitment of the professionals and advocates within the field, but rather due to a broader lack of understanding and prioritization among key influencers.

“To tackle these challenges, I’ve focused on growing my expertise, building partnerships, and amplifying MTML’s voice through constant advocacy and clear communication—helping others see both the urgency of adult literacy and the powerful change it brings,” she added.

Leadership Built on Learning, Reflection, and Vision

“As Executive Director of MTML, I have been provided with opportunities to drive innovative programming and build strong partnerships to amplify our collective impact on adult literacy. Recognizing the ongoing nature of leadership, I have continually sought new knowledge and experiences, knowing that success is not achieved overnight but through sustained commitment and lifelong learning. Each chapter in my career has contributed to a deeper understanding that continuous learning and reflective practice are key to successful leadership and organizational development,” says Ambreen.

Her current role at MTML has allowed her to take her passion for educational empowerment even further. At MTML, she continues this mission by driving innovative projects, building strong community partnerships, and creating resources that empower learners facing barriers. This role has amplified her ability to reach diverse groups, from adult learners overcoming obstacles to educators seeking meaningful strategies, and has enabled her to be part of a collective effort to create inclusive, transformative pathways through literacy. MTML’s commitment to equity and creativity has made it possible for her to continue championing education as the key to unlocking potential and empowering voices at every stage of life.

Additionally, launching Studypages, a Canadian non-profit initiative providing free online tutoring for Canadians, has been an essential part of her growth as a leader. This venture expanded her experience in building organizational infrastructure, mobilizing volunteers, and scaling support services, while reaffirming the importance of adaptability, resilience, and community-centered leadership.

Rooted in Purpose and People

As a woman entrepreneur, Ambreen’s responsibilities go beyond administration. She leads with a balance of strategic foresight and human-centered empathy—bridging gaps between learners, educators, policymakers, and communities. She also represents MTML on national and international platforms, ensuring that adult literacy remains a global priority.

“I proactively engage with other literacy organizations nationwide, nurturing knowledge sharing and unity within the sector. On the global stage, I represent MTML in forums and conversations that allow our work and the voices of adult learners to resonate internationally, while bringing back lessons and best practices that enrich our local efforts,” says Ambreen.

Her leadership embodies the entrepreneurial spirit of adaptability, purpose, and continuous learning—values that sustain MTML as a driving force for equity and empowerment. “My role spans securing resources, leading teams, and adapting to shifts like digitalization—all driven by an entrepreneurial spirit rooted in learning, resilience, and collaboration—keeping MTML a powerful force for equity and empowerment worldwide,” assures Ambreen.

Balancing Passion, Purpose, and Peace

Despite her demanding role, Ambreen maintains a sense of balance through mindfulness, family connection, and creative expression. Balancing leadership and life takes self-awareness, structured routines, and genuine passion. She has learned that true success grows through persistence and balance—by setting clear boundaries and cherishing time with her family, she stays grounded and inspired beyond work. Time spent with her daughters and loved ones grounds her, while crafting resin art serves as both a meditative escape and a reminder of creativity’s restorative power—fueling her leadership with fresh energy.

Creative expression helps me stay balanced—designing with resin brings joy and renewal, fueling my leadership with fresh energy. My drive for excellence comes from passion, not pressure, and by balancing ambition with well-being, I lead authentically while inspiring resilience in my team and community.

Women in Leadership: Persistence and Purpose

For Ambreen, persistence is the defining quality of every woman entrepreneur. It is the unwavering drive to achieve goals, maintain consistency, plan purposefully, and stay focused despite inevitable obstacles. These qualities empower women to continuously adapt, lead innovation, and pursue sustained success in the face of adversity.

She also acknowledges the added challenges faced by women of color, who often must work harder to be heard and recognized. This challenge deepens amid cultural bias and limited representation. They must constantly push to claim space, be seen, and drive inclusion in systems that aren’t always equitable.

For women entrepreneurs—especially women of color—success demands persistence, strategy, and focus, along with the resilience to prove their expertise and break through every visible and invisible barrier. Her message is one of courage and conviction: strategic planning, resilience, and self-belief are essential to transforming adversity into opportunity.

Words of Wisdom for Future Women Leaders

To aspiring women leaders and entrepreneurs, Ambreen offers timeless advice:

“There is no harm in starting from scratch. Challenges inevitably bring moments of self-doubt or setbacks, but these are part of every meaningful journey. The key is to remain consistent, persistent, and focused on your goals, even when progress seems slow or obstacles appear overwhelming. Ultimately, success comes from perseverance, a willingness to adapt, and a commitment to positive impact, both for yourself and for those you serve. Success may take time, but with resilience and a desire to help others, your impact will endure.”

Shaping the Future of Literacy

Looking ahead, Ambreen envisions MTML as a vibrant center for adult literacy—incorporating AI literacy programs and serving as a central resource where diverse stakeholders unite to amplify learner voices, develop innovative solutions, and strengthen partnerships. Her focus on building strong, positive relationships with employers, community organizations, governments, and other literacy agencies will foster collaboration, spark new projects, and ensure that MTML continues to reflect and respond to evolving community needs.

“My role is to lead this transformation with vision, connection, and empowerment—driving innovation while staying rooted in learners’ needs, and making MTML a beacon of progress, unity, and inclusion in adult literacy and workforce development,” says Ambreen.
